Job Summary

Join a mission-driven team at the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) and contribute to protecting, maintaining, and improving the health of all Minnesotans. We are seeking up to two (2) positions to join our team and assist senior staff in the Source Water Protection (SWP) Unit. These roles involve supporting a variety of critical tasks aimed at safeguarding water quality and ensuring the protection of drinking water sources. The incumbent must have a strong background in environmental science, water quality, and fieldwork, with a focus on source water protection and water resource management. This position offers an excellent opportunity to contribute to important environmental and public health initiatives.

Primary responsibilities include:
  • Assisting in the creation and execution of wellhead protection plans to ensure the integrity of drinking water sources.
  • Overseeing routine components of the SWP support program, including conducting field activities such as water quality sampling.
  • Preparing evaluations of alternative water sources for public water systems to ensure sustainable and safe drinking water supplies.
  • Conducting specialized tasks to support wellhead protection, including down-hole well investigations, aquifer characterization, and the collection and analysis of hydrologic spatial data.
This position may have the option of teleworking up to 50% of the time based on the business needs and manager discretion. Commuting to the St. Paul office and other MDH office locations across the state may be required. Reimbursement for authorized business travel expenses is provided according to bargaining unit guidelines.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Hydrologist 2:

(2) years of experience in environmental science, geology, water quality, or fieldwork related to source water protection or water resource management.

A master's degree in geology, hydrogeology, hydrology, environmental science, engineering , or a closely related field may be substituted for (18) months of experience ; A bachelor's degree in geology, hydrogeology, hydrology, environmental science, engineering or a closely related field may be substituted for (12) months of experience or an associate's degree in geology, hydrogeology, hydrology, environmental science, engineering or a closely related field may be substituted for 6 months of experience.

Additional minimum qualifications to be assessed during interview:
  • Ability to communicate clearly, orally and in writing, to convey hydrogeological concepts and data to a diverse set of partners.
  • Human relations skills to achieve effective working relationships within the agency and externally.
  • Ability to work independently and to organize work to address numerous competing priorities.
Preferred Qualifications
  • A bachelor's degree in geology, hydrogeology, hydrology, environmental science, engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience with field data collection, including water sampling and performing investigations such as down-hole well assessments or aquifer pumping tests.
  • Experience with geologic mapping and interpreting subsurface data, including water quality data.
  • General knowledge of well drilling and sealing principles and practices.
  • Working knowledge of GIS tools (e.g., ESRI, QGIS) and associated software for data collection, storage, analysis, and reporting of both tabular and spatial data.
  • Familiarity with Python or other scripting languages for data collection, transport, and retention.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to work outdoors in all seasons, including exposure to weather extremes, both inside and outside.
  • Ability to walk on even/uneven or sloping ground, including snow-covered terrain, for distances up to half a mile.
  • Ability to frequently lift items from waist or shoulder height and from ground to waist height.
  • Flexibility to work extended hours or long days as necessary to accommodate travel and clients' schedules.

This position does not require a driver's license but demands some travel that the candidate is responsible for meeting.
